Val's Story
Val Martens has always needed to and enjoyed being creative. If she doesn’t do something creative regularly, she gets really antsy. She went from folk art years ago to years of professional face painting in Edmonton. The pandemic ended that career. Now her canvases don’t wiggle but neither do they smile and hug her.
Val can’t settle on one style when there are so many styles to explore. However, there is a theme throughout her paintings. That theme is colour. Val is not scared to hide all the colours of the rainbow in her scenery, her florals, her abstracts or in a series of paintings. Val wants her paintings to spark emotion, to bring peace and calmness or curiosity to the viewer.
Val says “My paintings have helped me deal with emotions of burnout and loneliness.
I find such joy when my canvases speak to me and tell me what they need.
I bond with my paintings but also want to let them go and bring peace and joy when they speak to someone else."
Val learns where she can from videos, from books, from other artists and from classes. But mostly, it is hours and hours of painting and exploring. Val left her job in order to pursue her art full-time. She longs for her art to help bring wellness and peace to others.
